Video to MP3 Converter

Turn a video file into an MP3 you can play on any phone, car stereo or laptop. Choose 128, 192 or 320 kbps, press convert, and download the result. The conversion happens on your own device; no copy of the video is sent anywhere.

Your converted file

Choose a file and press Convert to MP3. The conversion runs in this tab, so even large files never leave your computer or phone.

Convert a video to MP3 in three steps

  1. Open the video with the box above. Phone clips, screen recordings, exported edits and camera files all work.
  2. Pick the MP3 quality. 192 kbps is the default and suits music and speech alike.
  3. Press "Convert to MP3" and download the file when it is ready.

Picking a bitrate

Bitrate sets how much data each second of sound may use, and with it the file size.

320 kbps
The highest MP3 setting, about 2.4 MB per minute. Worth it only when the source is high quality music.
192 kbps
About 1.4 MB per minute. A sensible default for mixed content.
128 kbps
About 1 MB per minute. Plenty for speech, lectures and podcasts.

A higher bitrate cannot add quality the video's own soundtrack never had. If a video's audio was recorded or uploaded at a low bitrate, choosing 320 kbps only makes a bigger file. When the soundtrack is stored below 128 kbps, the tool suggests 128 kbps automatically.

Why MP3 and not something newer

Newer codecs such as AAC and Opus sound better at the same bitrate, but MP3 is the format every player, editor and upload form accepts without question. When the goal is "a file that just works", MP3 is still the answer. If you would rather keep the sound exactly as it is in the video, use the extract audio tool and choose M4A.

Speed

Audio encoding is fast even inside a browser. In our tests on a recent laptop, the soundtrack of a 30-minute recording converted to MP3 in under 30 seconds. The picture is never decoded, so even high-resolution video converts quickly; the time depends mostly on the length.

After the conversion

An MP3 is ready for any listening app, and for mydubly's audio to text tool if you want a transcript. Transcription costs 1 credit per minute, and new accounts get 100 free credits.

How the free converter works

The converter is ffmpeg, the open-source media toolkit, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs inside your browser tab. Your file is read straight from your disk by that engine; it is never uploaded to mydubly or anywhere else, and no account is needed.

  • The engine is about 30 MB and downloads the first time you convert something. After that your browser normally keeps it.
  • Large inputs are fine because the file is read in place, but the result is built in memory, so outputs are capped at about 1.5 GB.
  • Speed depends on your device. Copying streams takes seconds; re-encoding video is the slow case.
  • Keep the tab open until the download button appears. Closing it stops the conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Is this video to MP3 converter really free?

Yes. It runs on your device using open-source ffmpeg, so there is no server cost to pass on. There is no watermark, no sign-up and no limit on how many files you convert.

Can I convert a YouTube link to MP3 here?

No. The tool converts video files you already have on your device. It does not download from YouTube or any other website.

Which video formats can I convert?

MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM are the common ones, and most other video files work too, including 3GP from older phones.

Why is my MP3 bigger than the video's audio?

If the video's sound was stored at a low bitrate, encoding it at 192 or 320 kbps makes a larger file without improving it. Choose 128 kbps for speech or low-quality sources.
