Your converted file

Choose a file and press Convert to WAV. The conversion runs in this tab, so even large files never leave your computer or phone.

Converting MP4 to WAV

  1. Choose your MP4 in the box above.
  2. Press "Convert to WAV".
  3. Download the file. It has the same name as your MP4 with a .wav extension.

Typical reasons to do this

  • An audio editor refuses the MP4 or opens it slowly, and a WAV imports instantly.
  • You want to clean up the sound, remove noise or apply effects, then put it back under the video.
  • A sampler, game engine or speech tool only takes WAV.
  • You are sending stems to a mix engineer who wants uncompressed audio.

The decode step, in plain terms

The sound in an MP4 is nearly always AAC. Converting to WAV decodes that AAC into raw samples and writes them unchanged, at the MP4's own sample rate (usually 48 kHz for cameras and phones, sometimes 44.1 kHz). Nothing is re-compressed, so this is the cleanest possible way to get the MP4's sound into an editor.

Three alternatives worth knowing

MP4 to M4A
Copies the AAC sound into an audio-only file without decoding. Smallest and exact. See the MP4 to M4A tool.
MP4 to MP3
Smaller and universally playable, but a second lossy encode. See MP4 to MP3.
MP4 to FLAC
Lossless like WAV, noticeably smaller. Available on the extract audio tool.

Putting the edited sound back

Because the WAV starts at exactly the same moment as the MP4's soundtrack and is the same length, you can line it back up in any video editor by snapping both to the start. If you trim the WAV, trim from the end or keep a note of the cut so you can realign it.

How the free converter works

The converter is ffmpeg, the open-source media toolkit, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs inside your browser tab. Your file is read straight from your disk by that engine; it is never uploaded to mydubly or anywhere else, and no account is needed.

  • The engine is about 30 MB and downloads the first time you convert something. After that your browser normally keeps it.
  • Large inputs are fine because the file is read in place, but the result is built in memory, so outputs are capped at about 1.5 GB.
  • Speed depends on your device. Copying streams takes seconds; re-encoding video is the slow case.
  • Keep the tab open until the download button appears. Closing it stops the conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Does MP4 to WAV lose quality?

No further quality is lost: the AAC sound is decoded once and stored uncompressed. It does not improve on the original either.

What sample rate will the WAV have?

The same as the MP4's sound, usually 48 kHz for phone and camera footage.

Is there a length limit?

The WAV must fit in your browser's memory, about 1.5 GB, which is roughly two hours of 48 kHz stereo. For longer files use FLAC or MP3.

Can I convert several MP4 files at once?

One at a time. After a download, choose the next file; the converter stays loaded, so the next one starts quickly.
