Converting 3GP to MP3
- Choose the .3gp file above. The file card shows the picture and sound codecs.
- Keep the suggested quality; 3GP sound is low-bitrate, so 128 kbps preserves all of it.
- Convert and download.
Inside a 3GP file
3GP is a container defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project for phones on 3G networks. It is a close relative of MP4, built to be small. The picture is usually H.263 or MPEG-4 at a low resolution such as 176 by 144 pixels, and the sound is usually narrowband AMR, the phone-call codec, or sometimes AAC on later handsets. The converter reads both kinds of sound; we tested it on real 3GP clips with H.263 picture and AMR sound from phones of that era.
What to expect from the sound
Early phone microphones and the AMR codec captured speech clearly but little else, so music and ambient sound in old clips can sound thin. Converting to MP3 keeps exactly what is there and makes it playable on any computer, phone or smart speaker. The sound is resampled to 44.1 kHz for compatibility, which doesn't change how it sounds.
Want the video too?
If you want to keep the picture, the MOV to MP4 converter accepts 3GP files as well: it re-encodes the old picture to H.264 and the sound to AAC, producing an MP4 that modern devices play. For a small, low-resolution 3GP clip that takes only seconds.
Preserving old recordings
When digitising a box of old phones, keep the original 3GP files alongside the converted copies; they are tiny, and future tools may do more with them. The AMR to MP3 converter handles the voice recordings those phones often saved separately, and the guide to organising family videos covers naming and storing an archive.
How the free converter works
The converter is ffmpeg, the open-source media toolkit, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs inside your browser tab. Your file is read straight from your disk by that engine; it is never uploaded to mydubly or anywhere else, and no account is needed.
- The engine is about 30 MB and downloads the first time you convert something. After that your browser normally keeps it.
- Large inputs are fine because the file is read in place, but the result is built in memory, so outputs are capped at about 1.5 GB.
- Speed depends on your device. Copying streams takes seconds; re-encoding video is the slow case.
- Keep the tab open until the download button appears. Closing it stops the conversion.

Frequently asked questions
What is a 3GP file?
A compact video container used by older mobile phones, usually holding H.263 or MPEG-4 video and AMR sound.
Can I convert 3GP to MP4 instead?
Yes. The MOV to MP4 converter accepts 3GP and re-encodes the old picture to H.264, which modern devices play.
Why is the sound quality poor?
Old phones recorded with basic microphones and the AMR speech codec. Converting keeps the sound as it is but can't improve it.
Does it work with .3g2 files?
3G2 is a close sibling of 3GP and usually converts the same way. If a file doesn't open, the tool tells you.
