OGG to MP3 Converter

OGG files play in many apps but not in all of them, and iPhones and some car stereos have long been the awkward ones. Convert the OGG to MP3 here, whatever codec it holds, without sending the file anywhere.

Choose a file and press Convert to MP3. The conversion runs in this tab, so even large files never leave your computer or phone.

How to convert OGG to MP3

  1. Choose the OGG file above; .oga files work too.
  2. Pick a quality. For music, 192 kbps; for voice messages, 128 kbps.
  3. Convert and download.

OGG is a wrapper, not a codec

Ogg is an open container format from the Xiph.Org Foundation. The sound inside is usually one of two codecs:

Vorbis
The classic OGG music codec, used by many games, open-source programs and Wikimedia Commons audio.
Opus
A newer codec designed for speech and low-latency audio. Telegram voice messages and many web recordings are Opus in an OGG file.

The converter detects which one your file holds and shows it on the file card. Both are lossy, so converting to MP3 is a second lossy encode; at 192 kbps that is hard to hear, and for voice messages 128 kbps is plenty.

Why your OGG won't play

Support for OGG depends on the app rather than the operating system. Firefox and Chrome, VLC and most Android apps play it. Older versions of iTunes and Windows Media Player, many car stereos and some editing tools don't. Rather than installing a codec pack, converting to MP3 gives you a file every program accepts.

Game and app audio

Game sound effects and music are often shipped as OGG Vorbis. Converting a clip to MP3 makes it easy to use in a video editor or to share it. If you plan to edit the sound, convert to WAV with the audio converter instead, so you are not editing a doubly compressed file.

Voice messages and transcripts

mydubly's audio to text tool accepts OGG directly, so a recorded message can be transcribed without converting. For WhatsApp voice notes, which use the .opus extension, see the Opus to MP3 converter.

How the free converter works

The converter is ffmpeg, the open-source media toolkit, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs inside your browser tab. Your file is read straight from your disk by that engine; it is never uploaded to mydubly or anywhere else, and no account is needed.

  • The engine is about 30 MB and downloads the first time you convert something. After that your browser normally keeps it.
  • Large inputs are fine because the file is read in place, but the result is built in memory, so outputs are capped at about 1.5 GB.
  • Speed depends on your device. Copying streams takes seconds; re-encoding video is the slow case.
  • Keep the tab open until the download button appears. Closing it stops the conversion.

Frequently asked questions

What is an OGG file?

An open audio container. It usually holds Vorbis or Opus sound, both of which this converter reads.

Can I play OGG on an iPhone?

Support varies by app and iOS version. Converting to MP3 guarantees it plays in every app, including Music and Files.

Is an OGG voice message the same as WhatsApp's .opus?

Both use the Opus codec in an Ogg container; only the extension differs. Either converts here.

Does it work offline?

Once the page and converter engine have loaded, the conversion itself doesn't need a connection.
