How to cut an audio file
- Open the recording with the box above. A player appears under the file details.
- Play to the point where the clip should begin and press "Start at playhead". Do the same for the end with "End at playhead".
- Or type the times directly as minutes:seconds, with tenths if you need them, for example 1:23.5.
- Choose the output format and press Cut. Play the result on the page before you download it.
Precise cuts
Times are accurate to a tenth of a second, and the clip is re-encoded from the exact start point rather than snapped to the nearest audio frame boundary. That precision matters when you are clipping a quote that begins right after someone else stops talking. If a cut lands a little early or late, nudge the time by a tenth and cut again; the original is untouched, so you can repeat as often as you like.
One section per cut
The cutter keeps a single section, from the start time to the end time. To remove something from the middle, cut the part before it and the part after it separately. To split a long recording into chapters, run the cutter once per chapter, which takes a few seconds each time.
Common uses
- Pull a quote from an interview to share or embed.
- Trim the silence or setup chatter from the start and end of a podcast or meeting recording.
- Make a short clip for a ringtone, alarm or voicemail greeting.
- Send someone only the minutes of a lecture that matter.
Cut before you transcribe
Transcribing only the part you need saves time and money. mydubly charges 1 credit per minute for a transcript, with a 5-credit minimum per file, so trimming a two-hour recording down to the 20 minutes you care about cuts the cost to match. Cut here, then upload the clip to audio to text. For very long files, the guide to transcribing long audio has more strategies.
How the free converter works
The converter is ffmpeg, the open-source media toolkit, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs inside your browser tab. Your file is read straight from your disk by that engine; it is never uploaded to mydubly or anywhere else, and no account is needed.
- The engine is about 30 MB and downloads the first time you convert something. After that your browser normally keeps it.
- Large inputs are fine because the file is read in place, but the result is built in memory, so outputs are capped at about 1.5 GB.
- Speed depends on your device. Copying streams takes seconds; re-encoding video is the slow case.
- Keep the tab open until the download button appears. Closing it stops the conversion.

Frequently asked questions
How do I cut part of an MP3?
Open it here, set the start and end with the playhead buttons or by typing times, choose MP3 and press Cut.
Can I remove a section from the middle?
The cutter keeps one continuous section. Cut the parts before and after the unwanted section separately.
Does cutting reduce the quality?
The clip is re-encoded in the format you choose. WAV keeps it lossless; MP3 and M4A are high quality at the default bitrate.
How precise is the cut?
To a tenth of a second. The clip starts exactly at the time you set.
