Brazil or Portugal
- Portuguese (Brazil)
- Translation steered toward Brazilian spelling, vocabulary and "você"
- Portuguese (Portugal)
- Translation steered toward European spelling, vocabulary and forms of address
- Portuguese
- A general option when the audience is mixed
The two differ in everyday words, such as "ônibus" and "autocarro" for bus or "time" and "equipa" for team, and in how people address each other. Choosing the variant matters most when you translate into Portuguese.
Portuguese speech to subtitles
Brazilian and European Portuguese both transcribe well. European Portuguese, with its reduced vowels, is slightly harder for speech recognition when spoken fast, so a quick conversation from Lisbon is worth a closer read than a slow lecture from São Paulo. Names, places and English terms are the words to check first.
A large audience for Portuguese
Brazil is one of YouTube's largest markets, so a Portuguese subtitle track can open an English video to a big audience. Portuguese usually runs longer than English, so translated cues carry more text. Each cue is one stretch of speech on a single line; split crowded ones at a pause in a subtitle editor, keeping the times in order. Subtitle readability suggests limits.
Using the file
Upload the SRT in YouTube Studio under the Portuguese variant that matches it, or import it into an editor as a caption track. Accented letters and ç are stored as UTF-8 and display correctly in current players. To translate the speech as a voice track instead, see the Portuguese video translator.
What Portuguese subtitles cost
Portuguese (Brazil) subtitles: 12 credits (1.2¢).
Portuguese subtitles: 35 credits (3.5¢).
Subtitles cost 1 credit per minute with a 5-credit minimum per file, and the 100 free credits from signing in with Google cover 100 minutes. Top-ups are charged in Indian rupees at the day's exchange rate through Cashfree Payments (UPI, cards or netbanking), about ₹96 for 1,000 credits.
Using the tool on this page
- The spoken language is detected automatically; you select the output language — the spoken language itself for an untranslated transcript, or another language for a translation. Files can be up to 2 hours long.
- Only the audio is sent for processing — the video stays on your device — and audio and text are deleted within 30 minutes of delivery (how files are protected).
- You can download a timestamped transcript, subtitles (SRT and VTT) and plain text. Every output, step and limit is explained on the subtitle generator page.
